So, the last few weeks I have been feeling pretty icky.  Cramps, bloating, and a nice, fun infection.  I have also been exhausted!  Have I mentioned that I hardly ever get cramps and basically never am bloated? 

Well, I don’t, which got me to thinking maybe, just maybe I was pregnant. 

And, you know what… part of me was kind of excited about the possibility, until Wednesday and good ‘ol auntie flo arrived… now part of me is a little bummed…

Last weekend we celebrated Niece’s 3rd birthday with her family at that place where a kid can be a kid.  She spent the entire time running back and forth between the carosel and her constant-token-source… her Daddy.  She has him trained!

5 year old: “You look very nice today.  I like your hair that way.”

Me: “Thank you!”

5 year old: “I also like your ear rings, they look very nice.  You do look really nice today!”

Me: “Thank you!”

5 year old: “… But I DO NOT like that other ear ring (I have one on the top of my ear).  It is strange.  It doesn’t look good.  You would look much nicer without it!’

Me: “Uhh.. OK… sorry.. um… Thank you”

I guess my dad has given up on me.  The other day he was asking what I want to do with my life.  I said I didn’t know, but I probably always will work… I just want it to be flexible so I can spend more time with hubby. 

He said, “It would be nice for you to be able to spend more time at home so you can have lots of puppies!”

I guess he figures I’m not going to give him grandkids and I’d be more suited to staying home turning into some crazy dog lady. 

Nice.

So, we have been questioned many times by people wondering why we don’t have kids yet.  This weekend, we were subjected to an interrogation by a 5 year old about our reproductive choices…

“Do you have kids?”

“Why don’t you have kids?”

“Are you going to have kids?

“I thought you would have had kids by now!”

Yeah, so did a lot of people…

Last weekend we were visiting with a friend and his two daughters ages 5 and almost 2.  We made the mistake of teaching the 5 year old “Knock, Knock” and “Why did the ____ cross the road?” jokes.  Her jokes, although making no sense to anyone who was not 5 years old, were hillarious.  After hearing us laugh at her sister’s “jokes” about cars, lightpoles, and articles of clothing, the little 2 year old chimed in…

“Knock, Knock…. shit!”

“Knock, Knock…. shit!”

Had to be the funniest “Knock, Knock” joke of all time, especially with her dad trying to assure us that she was indeed trying to say “shirt”

Niece to me as I was leaving her house after a visit the other day: “Please come and visit me again real soon, okay?”

Did I mention she is only 2 1/2?!?

I just got a call from my dear Mommy-Friend.  It was short and to the point because she had screaming kiddos in the background she had to go deal with.

“There are two things we will NEVER do again…

One… go to Disneyland… Two.. have more kids.”

I haven’t heard the rest of the details, but a safe guess would be that the trip to Disneyland that we encouraged them to go on was a massive failure.  Poor things… they had even had Grammy & Grandpa come along as backup.  I guess two kids under the age of 3 and the Happiest Place on Earth don’t mix.

Why is it that when someone close to you has a baby, you get inundated with questions as to when your blessed even will be coming?

Why do people think that holding a newborn will make you suddenly want to jump on the baby bandwagon?

I can’t even begin to count how many times I have been asked if my sister’s baby makes me want to have one of my own. Of course he is cute and sweet… for now… but that doesn’t change the reasons why I haven’t had a child yet. It doesn’t change the fact that we are not financially ready for a child. It doesn’t change the fact that we are in a transitional period of our lives with our careers. It doesn’t change any of the other factors that Hubby and I have discussed about when it will be right for us to bring another life into the world.

Last weekend, Hubby and I were hanging out with the family. We were playing with the baby and having a fine time when New Daddy leaned over to Hubby and ever-so-casually asked, “Sooooooo, when will you guys being having one?” I guess he has been asked that one to many times because Hubby looked right back at New Daddy and said, “We probably won’t ever have one. Kids take away your freedom and I am not quite sure I ever want that to happen. ” New Daddy just stared at Hubby like he had lost it.

Chances are that we will have a little kiddo one day, but it is kinda fun messing with people when they constantly ask when that day will be.

• The commercial of the mom & daughters making Rice Krispies Treats.  Something about it gets me every time.
• Parent confessionals on “Motherhood is Not for Wimps.”  Every few months parents “confess” their worst to each other.  If these people can raise kids there is hope for me yet!
• Nephew when he is asleep… actually, any kid when they are asleep.  It is when they wake up that I question my feelings on the subject.
